ABOUT US
The Seafood Exporters' Association of Sri Lanka (SEASL) is a leading trade association that has been pivotal in shaping the development and growth of Sri Lanka's seafood industry, particularly in the export sector. Founded in 2016, SEASL was established to address the challenges faced by seafood exporters, promoting best practices, and fostering a sustainable, competitive industry. The association represents a wide range of stakeholders within the seafood supply chain, including fishers, processors, Aqua culturists exporters, and other related businesses, all of whom contribute to the production and export of high-quality seafood.
One of the key functions of SEASL is advocating for the improvement of government policies and regulations that affect the seafood export industry. The association actively collaborates with the government, particularly the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, to develop strategies that enhance the sector's global competitiveness, sustainability, and resilience. SEASL also works to ensure that the industry complies with international standards and certifications, such as the Global GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) and BRC (British Retail Consortium), which are crucial for accessing global markets.
SEASL also focuses on promoting sustainable fishing practices and responsible seafood sourcing, in line with global trends towards environmental conservation. The association supports the adoption of eco-friendly fishing methods and works towards reducing the impact of overfishing as well. Furthermore, SEASL is committed to enhancing the traceability of seafood products, which is increasingly important in meeting the demands of international consumers and retailers for ethically sourced products.
With a strong emphasis on international trade, SEASL helps to open new markets and expand the reach of Sri Lanka's seafood products. Key exports include fish such as tuna, shrimp, blue swimming crab, and cuttlefish, with significant export destinations including the European Union, Japan, the United States, and the Middle East. By supporting members in navigating the complexities of international trade regulations and market demands, SEASL ensures that Sri Lanka remains a key player in the global seafood industry.
